just don't stop believingdon't stop believingdon't stop believing . . . . . . . The astronomy tower. Jess loved it up here. She'd always loved the feel of the wind as it brushed her hair and swept over the tower, causing her to shiver. She loved it up here at night as well. You could see the stars perfectly from here. Obviously this was why it was the astronomy tower but still, it was magnificent. She had also heard the storys of how one of the, in her mind, most famous headmasters had been killed on this very tower. She knew of a few people who were scared of coming up here although she was unsure of why.
Giggling quietly to herself, she ran up the steps to the top of the tower. It was rather far up from where she was but she had a lot of energy that needed burning off before she headed back to the main hall for dinner. She knew that her friends may be used to her hyperness but she also knew that sometimes they got a little fed up of it. So she thought she would go up here for a while, calm down as much as she could before she had to go back down stairs.
Once she had reached the top of the tower she jumped up and down happily, clapping her hands happily. Spinning around, she looked over the edge of the tower feeling the slight breeze brush against her face and ruffling her hair. She giggle again childishly as she looked down at the people walking around below her. From here they looked so small, like little ants. It was as if she stepped out ever so slightly, she could crush them with her foot. Not that she would ever dream of doing that of course. She was, after all, against acts of violence.
Tucking her hair behind her ears she took hold of her camera which she nearly always had with her. It wasn't like the one she had at home, she'd had to leave it behind. This was only because she had been informed that a muggle camera wouldn't work in the castle although she wasn't sure if she had been told the truth or not. But for the past six years she'd been using a wizard camera. She wasn't exactly fond of it but it would do. As long as she actually had a camera with her she was happy. She looked back down to the ground and then across the grounds before snapping a few photos of the scenary just as she had promised her mother, like she did every year.
Each year when she came back to Hogwarts she promised her mother to take a few photos of her friends and the castle to show her how it had changed. Jessy sometimes wondered why her mother cared so much but she never argued. She loved to take photos and so would just nod and smile, promising her mother each year. It seemed to be the only thing she was capable of doing to please her mother, seeing as her grades were never any good. Only her brother and sister could manage to keep up their grades, she on the otherhand really needed help with them. . . . . . . . IT'S TIME TO START THE COUNTDOWNI'M GUNNA BURN IT DOWN, DOWN, DOWN* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * despite the fact that many students went to the astronomy tower for times of solitude, caleb felt like he had a personal claim on it. it was where he went when he was about to explode... or implode. caleb had the tendency to hold his emotions and comments in, afraid to hurt anyone's feeling. when all those emotions build up over the months, he would go to the astronomy tower to blow up in private. in the tower, he could scream into the night, cry, and laugh, without the fear of judgment.
caleb, due to his attachment to the tower, was slightly put off when he saw someone was in it on this particular day. he arrived in the tower later in the day and was greeted into it with a flash. it took him a moment to realize that it was the flash of a camera and not a reaction from a spell being put off. caleb let his eyes recover from the flash and saw that the distance figure was a blond girl firmly holding a camera in her hand. the girl had a childlike quality about her and a smile on her face but it was obvious she was around his age. she had a beautifully innocent and sweet quality about her which made her appear younger. as caleb looked at her a few minutes longer, he realized that she was a hufflepuff in his year.
"oh!" he said loudly without even thinking. the realization of who she was came aloud to his mouth. now, it would be obvious that the girl had company in the tower. caleb couldn't simply sneak back down the stairs now. "um, sorry, - i didn't mean to interrupt your photography here. i could leave if you want, unless your done up here.. or don't mind my being here." caleb ran his fingers through his short hair nervously, smiled, and blushed slightly. he was embarrassed of his sudden presence in the room and even felt as if he was intruding on the girl.

just don't stop believingdon't stop believingdon't stop believing . . . . . . . Jess was leaning pretty far out of the window, trying to take a good photo of the lake which was pretty visible from here. She hadn't heard anyone come up. Right at this moment she was stuck in her own little world. Her own little world of photography. Right now, she felt like she was floating in the air. This probably had something to do with the fact that she was leaning so far out of the tower that she was just about standing on the floor. If she leant out just a little further, it was possible that she would fall out and most probably to her death. She knew how high up this tower was but wasn't scared of heights. She saw no logical reason to be, it wasn't like they could hurt you.
So when she heard a voice come from the tower she squealed in surprise but made sure to fall backwards, knowing it would hurt less and she'd more then likely survive. She laid on her back for a few minutes before bursting into a fit of giggles at the fact she'd managed to fall on the floor like this. She managed to stand up and brush herself off, now covered in dirt and dust from the floor. She took a deep breath, calming herself down before turning to look at the person that had disturbed her thoughts. She realized her was a boy from hufflepuff in her year. She'd seen him around a lot but not really spoken to him. Most people tended to keep a distance from her, especially when she was in full out hyper mode.
Jessica didn't say anything for a moment as she checked over her camera, making sure it was still functioning. She then smiled at the boy in front of her. "Don't be silly, of course you can stay up here. I don't own the tower." She laughed waving her hand slightly as if to dismiss the subject. "I can't say who can stay up here and who must leave." She added on with a smile. "Although it was a bit of a surprise. Luckily i remembered to fall backwards instead of forwards. That would not have been a fun fall." She said, more to herself then anyone as she looked down at the ground and shuddered slightly. "I'm Jessica by the way. Jessica Waters, Sixth year, Hufflepuff." She said, holding out her hand to him as she introduced herself happily. She knew that most people would feel a little self-concious by the fact they'd been watched by someone and probably wouldn't be as happy as she was to see someone here. She loved to meet new people, it made her happy, especially when they became friends.

IT'S TIME TO START THE COUNTDOWNI'M GUNNA BURN IT DOWN, DOWN, DOWN* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Caleb smirked as he saw the girl fall back into the astronomy tower. He was in mixed emotions. He felt bad for laughing considering if she would have fallen the other way, it would be a much different situation. A small puff of dust went up into the air as she fell. The girl quickly rebounded and stood back up. Her camera was her first priority and she check that nervously to check to see if it was okay. This obsessive check of the camera made Caleb wonder if she was on the school paper or an aspiring photographer for the Daily Prophet. A smile spread across her face as she noted the good condition of the camera and then looked up to Caleb. Caleb listened carefully to the girl's dismissing of his question of whether or not he should leave. The way she made it sound as if the question was ridiculous made Caleb more comfortable. The girl was obviously sociable and extremely kind. A Hufflepuff by no question.
A solid nod was Caleb's response to the remark of the fall forward. He would not have forgiven himself for scaring a girl into that kind of fall. “I agree. I'm pretty sure no amount of Skele-grow could help you then.” Caleb smiled widely and then winced remembering when he broke his arm playing Quidditch in his second year. The Skele-grow solved the break but put him in intense pain for days and that was just one bone.
The sweet Hufflepuff girl introduced herself as Jessica Waters and as soon as she spoke her name Caleb knew he had heard it before. The name would have came to him eventually. She confirmed the fact that they were in fact in the same year and house. This made Caleb smile the same happy smile she was granting him. He too loved meeting new people. “I'm Caleb Cauldwell. I'm also a sixth year Hufflepuff and I'm glad you didn't take that fall forward. I would have felt pretty horrible for causing it.”
Caleb took several steps forward, placing him next to Jessica in the Astronomy tower. He looked down the building, seeing the grounds below. He would have crawled into a hole if some poor girl had died on his behalf. A gust of wind, crisp and cool, pushed him a little farther back into the Astronomy tower and he pulled his peacoat tighter on himself. He had a tendency to get cold extremely easily even when other's weren't. The wind hitting his face flushed his face making his cheeks go pink. Caleb turned his head out of the winds aim and noticed the camera again. “An aspiring photographer?” He asked not moving his eyes from the camera.

just don't stop believingdon't stop believingdon't stop believing . . . . . . . Jess laughed quietly at his statement. From what she had heard, Skele-grow also tasted disgusting and caused much dis-comfort. "You never knowit might work .. I could end up just as a skeleton, walking around the school. Or a ghost. That would be pretty fun." Jess said giggling quietly to herself at the thought of wondering around as a skeleton. A skeleton with the hufflepuff school uniform on. That would be a site to see. She was pretty sure it would make everyone else laugh as well, not just her. She glanced over at Caleb, wondering if he thought she was completly nuts yet. If he didn't know, then he was bound to soon.
"I knew you were a Hufflepuff. I just had this feeling." Jessica said happily. It was half true. She had already known that he was a Hufflepuff after seeing him around the common room but still, it was nice to think she had guessed it. Made her feel a little bit special. "You'd of felt bad? Then i'd have felt even worse for making you feel bad. If that makes sense." Jess said, thinking it through in her head a few times, wondering if what she had said really made any sense. "I'm sure it's not that bad, death i mean. Anyway, I'd come back as a ghost, cause i'm cool like that." Jess grinned at him, leaning backwards on the windowsill.
Jess looked at Caleb and noticed that he was staring at her camera. She smiled slightly and nodded. "I suppose so. I do love photography. It's amazing." She said, looking at her camera fondly. "I'm not sure my mum would appreciate that though. She would much rather me do something usefull with my life. Then again, with my grades there is not a lot of things i could do i don't think." She said shaking her head slightly, a smile still on her face. The wind caught her hair, ruffling it and blowing it into her face. She pushed it behind her ears, trying, and failing, at keeping it out of her face.
She looked at him for a moment before realization hit her. "You play Quidditch don't you?" She said with a smile, glad she remembered. She didn't pay much attention because in all honesty, Quidditch had never interested her. She was the odd one out in her family, following all the muggle sports instead. They just interested her so much more.

IT'S TIME TO START THE COUNTDOWNI'M GUNNA BURN IT DOWN, DOWN, DOWN* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * “It makes perfect sense,” smiled Caleb a reassuring smile, “I always feel bad when I hurt someone's feelings even slightly or anything. So, I understand.” A pause and a sigh came out of Caleb lips as he began to tremble due to the cold. He ran his fingers through his hair nervously and looked down at the girl who introduced herself as Jessica. The name fit her. She looked like a Jessica. Caleb's height made her tower over the girl by a whole foot. He was use to this and looked down at the top of the girl's head. “I had a feeling you were a Hufflepuff too. I've seen you around in classes and stuff.”
Caleb laughed along with Jess as she talked about being a ghost. He found that this Jessica girl sure knew how to talk, but he liked it. He was usually the one trying to force conversation between people and come up with things to say. The thought of death wasn't something that scared Caleb either. He found the idea of death to be somewhat peaceful in essence. “I don't think I would mind being a ghost either. at least a ghost here at Hogwarts, there'd always be others around, like Peeves. Eternity with Myrtle might bother me after a while,” Caleb said with a snicker. He had met Myrtle in his second year when accidentally ending up in the girl's bathroom. He found that even Peeves was less annoying than her moaning was.
It made sense that the girl's mother was pushing her to do something more tradition with her career plans. Caleb hated when parents did that though. He was lucky his parents didn't. Both of his parent's parents had done that and they promised themselves to never do that to their children. Caleb was free to do whatever made him happy in life. “I think photography is pretty damn useful,” Caleb said firmly, “and grades don't really matter for it. Without photography, the Daily Prophet would be much more boring than it already is. I say you go for it.”
Jessica pushed her hair behind her ears before suddenly asking if Caleb played Quidditch. Caleb's face lite up in excitement. He loved when he could talk about Quidditch. It was one of his passions besides Charms. “Yeah, I'm keeper for Hufflepuff. I'd been playing Quidditch for ages. It's my passion.”

just don't stop believingdon't stop believingdon't stop believing . . . . . . . Jessica grinned brightly and clapped her hands. "I'm not the only one then? Thats good. I always wonder if maybe i'm just strange. Well I am strange but i mean .." She trailed off, unsure of what she did mean. She was starting to talk gibberish again. "Aha, so fellow Hufflepuff. What brings you to the tower?" She asked him curiously, smiling still. That was the thing with Jess, she was always smiling. It was rare to see her unhappy. Infact, it was almost unheard of. She only showed negative emotions in front of her closest friends and even then it was a little out of character for her.
Jess faked shock and shook her head. "Myrtle is amazing. I love talking to her. She's just had a hard life is all." She said, sticking her tongue out at Caleb. "Of course you'd like Peeves though. For some reason quite a few people do. He annoys me though, always throwing bits of rubber and paper at my head when I walk to classes. If I was a ghost I would totally get him back." Jessica said, frowning slightly at the memory as she rubbed the back of her head, remembering the pain. She would get revenge on Peeves. Even though she wasn't one to believe in revenge for him she could make a small exception. Then Jessica raised an eyebrow and smirked. "Oh and.. how did you manage to find your way into the girls bathroom exactly?" She asked him, laughing quietly. She often wondered why the boys would venture in there. It confused her so much.
Her face once again brightened considerably and she looked up at him, her eyes shining. "You think Photography is useful?! Seriously?. I think I love you!" She sqeauled happily before realizing what she said and going quiet for a second to re-consider her words. "As a friend of course." She added on with a smile, not wanting to comepletly freak the boy out. She then shook her head. "I'd make my own newspaper which would be way more interesting. The Daily Prophet bores me. They never really write about anything useful. Well I don't think so anyway." She shrugged. Sometimes she would glance over the newspaper but there was never anything interesting in there.
Jessica laughed lightly at the way Caleb's expression changed considerably. She could tell he was obviously very passionate about Quidditch just like she was about photography. "Ah so your the keeper. You do really well y'know. The whole team does. It must have taken ages to get that good .. Or does it come naturally to you?" She asked him with a smile, trully interested. Her brother had tried to teach her how to play once. We should just say that it ended badly.

IT'S TIME TO START THE COUNTDOWNI'M GUNNA BURN IT DOWN, DOWN, DOWN* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * What brought him to the tower? The same thing that always brought him to the tower. The search for solitude and the place to go blow up. Caleb always tried to tip toe around everybody's feelings, holding in his own feelings, suppressing any anger or sadness, and he would go up to the tower to explode his feelings or just think. The tower was a great thinking place and just a place to be alone. So far though, he didn't mind the company of Jess in the tower. She seemed like a terrific girl and so far, she was amusing him, making him feel better. A tone of melancholy was in Caleb's voice as he responded to her question. “I regularly come up here. This is where my sister can find me whenever she knows I'm upset or need to think. This is my place of solitude most of the time.” Caleb's sister was the only one who knew he came up to the top of the tower. His twin was one of the only people he was close to, besides Molly and Scorpius. “What about you, Jess?” He said, informally shorting her name like they were already friends.
A laugh sneaked it's way out of Caleb's mouth. Peeves was often horribly torturous, but could be amusing at times. “Sorry, about Peeves. He can be bad at times. And I didn't mean to go into the girl's bathroom. It wasn't intention. I accidentally went in there and Myrtle kept talking for what seemed like hours.” Caleb laughed thinking that this girl thought he was purposefully going into the girl's bathroom. He wasn't the type of guy that would be sneaking into the girl's bathroom. It was a ridiculous idea to imagine him like that.
The girl's sudden proclamation of her love for him made Caleb choke on his spit. She retracted it and he couldn't help but laugh. She was easily excited and tended to spit out ideas off the top of her head. He found this quite amusing. “You could maybe start some wizarding magazine.” Caleb though about his Muggle cousin Madeline who religiously read a magazine called Seventeen. “My cousin Madeline is obsessed with this magazine for muggle girls. You could make the same thing for witches or something.”
“I guess you could say it comes pretty naturally,” Caleb said proudly, running his fingers through his brown hair out of habit. “Although Scorpius and I use to practice in my back yard religiously. That was our life as lads. We were rarely on the ground.” As he admitted his friendship with Scorpius, he waited for a change in Jessica's expression. People were often shocked to find out that Scorpius and Caleb were associated, much less friends. At times the two were inseparable. “The team has gotten much better. For awhile in my early years, we weren't so good.”

just don't stop believingdon't stop believingdon't stop believing . . . . . . . "Now I feel like i'm the one intruding." Jessica said with a slight laugh. She meant it though, had she known that he liked being up here by himself she would have left. The poor boy had wanted to be by himself and by some horrible twist of fate had met up with Jess. She bit down on her lip, feeling guilty. She felt like she should just leave now but he was talking again and asking her why she was here. "I get sent up here by my friends to chill out. Or just because it's peacefull up here. I like being up high, it's calming. I guess I was just too hyper again today so they sent me up here to cool off a bit before going to dinner." She said with a laugh. Her friends were the best, they just couldn't handle her irrational hyperness and general randomness. There really was such a thing as being too weird. She was proof of that.
"Peeves is a prat." Jessica muttered under her breath. "Sure you weren't. It was totally accidental that you ended up in there." She grinned, mocking him. Of course, she was only joking. He seemed like a nice guy and she doubted he would just be walking into the girls bathrooms for a laugh. "Well it's not like she gets to talk often though. She does get annoying i suppose. Sometimes. But then, so do I." Jessica laughed slightly. Myrtle may be annoying but Jess was pretty sure she could beat her anyday. Plus, she'd been known to talk just as much. Although she didn't go round moaning al the time so she wasn't exactly like Myrtle. She still felt bad for her. She'd hate to be in that position. It must be horrible, having nearly the whole school making fun of you.
"Aha, I scared you for a moment then, didn't I?" She laughed happily. His expression a moment ago had been priceless. She should have taken a photo but was too occupied laughing about it. She had a tendancy to say things like that to her friends. Although she didn't really say it to strangers there was always a first time for everything. "It's not one of those gossip magazines is it." She asked him, pulling a face. She couldn't stand spreading gossip and didn't like people that did it ether. It was pointless, hurting peoples feelings for no reason other then revenge. "If I started a magazine it would be about music, books and photography. Except I'd keep up with the muggle bands instead. I prefer them." She said with a slight laugh. She seemed to prefer a lot of muggle things to wizarding. Her mother had often said she would probably fit in better there aswell. She was probably right.
"Scorpius .. He's that Slytherin kid isn't he?" Jess said, a slight frown on her face. "I bet you get a lot of hell for being friends with him." She said somewhat knowingly. She had nothing against Slytherins. Sure, a few of them pissed her off but hey, there wasn't really anything wrong with them. Plus, seeing as both her brother and sister were slytherins themselves it wasn't like she could hate them. It would be wrong. Although Scorpius was an exception for her. Him and her just didn't get along. Not that she'd spoken to him too many times. "It's all about practice. Practice makes perfect after all." She grinned at him.

IT'S TIME TO START THE COUNTDOWNI'M GUNNA BURN IT DOWN, DOWN, DOWN* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * It was foolish for either of them to feel like they were intruding. The Astronomy tower was free for anyone to be at. Caleb had come up that peaceful feeling he felt at the top of the tower as well. “It is peaceful up here, isn't it. I think the height does do something for yah.” Caleb looked down and smiled at the Jess girl, glad he had found someone with the same admiration of the tower. “I wouldn't say you scared me as much as surprised me a little. Strangers don't usually profess their love to me.” Muggle music was something that he was addicted to as well, so were Muggle clothes. Most people found it odd that Caleb preferred a lot Muggle culture rather than wizard culture. Caleb could often be found in jeans and t-shirts from Muggle stores. As he thought of it, it wasn't a gossip magazine as much as a beauty magazine. There wasn't much music information in it. “It is a gossip magazine, it's a beauty magazine,” Caleb explained, “My cousin Madeline and my sister read them and use to try putting the makeup stuff on.”
Caleb laughed as Jess called Scorpius “that Slytherin kid.” The thing was that Scorpius was more like the poster boy for the Slytherin clan. He was egotistical, charming, and witty, which could be good traits or horrible ones. These traits made him one of Caleb's best friends as well as one of Caleb's biggest enemies. The two were always fighting and dueling over things. When they started at Hogwarts, their fighting started. They both changed with age. “Yes, Scorpius would be that Slytherin kid. Sometimes I give myself hell for being friends with him. He can be a real ass at times, but he's like a brother.”

just don't stop believingdon't stop believingdon't stop believing . . . . . . . Jess nodded her agreement. "I don't understand why people are so scared of heights. It just seems irrational to me." She said with a sigh, leaning over the edge of the tower again. As the wind began to pick up again she began to wonder what it would feel like to fall. Just for a few seconds to feel like you were flying, to feel free. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad, not that dying was a good thing of course. She needed to stop thinking like this. Maybe this was what her friends had planned. She'd come up here then become .. normal. Shuddering slightly at the thought she shook her head. For her, normal was a very very bad thing.
"Aha .. I think I do that to a lot of people. Not that I go round telling everyone I love them or anything." She said with a slight laugh. Okay so maybe she told a few too many strangers she loved them but it was more because of her totaly hyperness then the fact she actually did love them. She realized that she should probably stop doing that. Just because she often didn't explain afterwards why she said it. Ah well, they'd figure it out surely. She didn't care. It was there problem. Not hers. Well .. sort of not hers. "M'hmm .. I'm assuming they like muggle things as well then?" She said, happy that she wasn't the only one.
"Sounds like you two are great friends." She said, with a smile. From what she had heard though, Scorpius wasn't that bad. He obviously didn't care about what house you were in which was a good thing seeing as a lot of Slytherins were .. very chosey about who their friends were. Then again, she could be just like that no matter how much she hated it.
